Principles of Management (MGT 202

Business & Management
Course Description
This course introduces students to the history,
theory and practice of management. It reviews
different management techniques and their
appropriate applications. Students learn to
assess their own approaches to management
and to formulate management styles and practices
by developing management applications in simulated
management positions. The course content is
incorporated into applied exercises and student
projects so that issues such as organizational
context, strategy, leadership, and human relations
are addressed.
Learning Objectives After completing this
course, students will be able to:
• Discuss various management techniques
• Use those techniques appropriately
in all types of management situations
• Explain the relationships among management
and the organizational environment and culture,
the government, and society
• Apply management functions of planning,
organizing, leading, and controlling
• Analyze an organization's strategy
to meet competition
• Organize people, projects and processes
• Propose processes for increasing efficiency,
coordinating activities, and increasing the
social benefits of the leadership process
Breadth of Assignments
This course uses a variety of methods to explore
the Principles of Management including: textbook
reading assignments, online e-lectures, web
resources provided to support particularly
challenging subject matter, self-assessment
quizzes and graded exams, collaborative projects
involving problem-solving or discussions with
classmates, individual activities ranging
from Java and Flash-based interactive exercises
to writing assignments and case studies.
