The Public Health Postdoctoral Program will examine advanced methods of adult learning and distance education and will focus on the implementation of the principles of androgogy and taught principles of adult learning in health education context. The course will provide and prepare researchers and practitioners with the knowledge and skills to design effective and evidence-based programs which reach underserved populations using online and distance education methods. Learners will engage with current research on adult learning theory, digital pedagogies, and public health intervention, which will provide participants with the skills and capability to design educational experiences that will have departure toward sustainable learning initiatives in a way that supports Postdoctoral in Public Health lifelong learning and community health and wellness.

The Postdoctoral in Public Health will feature a rigorous curriculum that was developed for the advancement of research and practice in Public Health. The postdoctoral degree in public health core curriculum will offer courses in advanced epidemiology, biostatistics, health policy and management, global and community health, and environmental health. The related postdoctoral research in public health courses will offer additional courses in adult learning (andragogy), distance and digital learning, evaluation of postdoctoral fellowship in public health programs, and applied public health intervention. These public health postdoctoral program courses will prepare public health researchers and educators with an innovative, evidence based foundation from which they can develop impactful public health interventions and advance their own professional development.
The orientation courses in this postdoctoral program offer a basic introduction to important concepts, tools, and skills to succeed in advanced public health research and practice. Publication – The postdoctoral program supports and encourages scholars in publishing original research in peer-reviewed journals, conference proceedings, and professional journals. Students can publish research from projects related to public health interventions, adult learning (andragogy), and providing innovative distance learning. The publication of original postdoctoral public health research helps postdoctoral scholars contribute to the public’s health knowledge, establish their professional visibility, and develop valuable skills in scientific writing, scientific presentation of data, and the communication of research.
The dissertation defense serves as a capstone to the postdoctoral program, allowing scholars to present and engage in a substantive critical discussion of their research. This provides the opportunity for candidates to demonstrate their assimilation of concepts in public health, research designs, and the application of principles andragogy and distance learning to their work.
During the dissertation defense, scholars may engage with a committee of scholars who provide substantive feedback, determine the robustness and significance of the dissertation research, and evaluate the scholar’s readiness to contribute meaningfully to the field. Passing the postdoctoral program in public health dissertation defense is an indicator that the scholar is ready to develop evidence; contribute to practice; or lead and engage in innovative initiatives in the field of public health education and research.
The postdoctoral phase is intended to be a transformative, collaborative, and intellectually challenging experience. Scholars will engage in research at the forefront of the discipline, and immersive and interactive distance learning modules utilizing global health postdoctoral program principles of adult learning addressing real-world public health challenges. During the program, postdoctoral opportunities in public health students will be mentored by experienced faculty, engage interprofessionally and transdisciplinarily, and present and publish their work. Each of these learning opportunities is organized so that students will grow in their abilities as a scholar and public health professional through critical thinking, innovation, and professional capacity building. Ultimately, postdoctoral public health research fellowship scholars are positioned to become leaders in public health education, research, and practice.
Community and social engagement is an essential part of this postdoctoral program, and requires the application of research and learning to real public health challenges. Scholars work in partnership with community partners at the local and global level to co-design, implement and evaluate health education programs with focus on accessibility, equity and social impact. Through service-learning, partnerships and outreach, public health research fellowship postdoctoral scholars gain real-world experience in staff or community engagement in health literacy, building strong community engagement and addressing social determinants of health. This experience ultimately provides both greater social impact and value to the original global health research team and scholars who are developing socially responsible organizational leaders in the space of population health.

Each year AIU organizes graduation ceremonies where the students can assist and share their experiences with fellow students and academic members Participation in the ceremony is optional, the day’s events include conferences, research presentations, group meetings, networking, lunch and formal dinner.

The postdoctoral program allows scholars to get involved in special projects that can address real world public health issues, and provide practical experience in designing, implementing and evaluating research. Scholars are strongly encouraged to help in preparing papers for publication, such as a peer review journal or conference posting, to help disseminate, and create impact in their work. The virtual campus program fosters co-authoring with faculty and other researchers which establishes collaborative partnerships, mentoring and interdisciplinary scholarship. The Career Center provides resource opportunities for post-docs, including mentorship programs, workshop sessions covering grant writing and scientific communication, and one-on-one coaching opportunities to support post-docs as they transition into leadership roles at the public health level. The AIU Career Center aims to empower a new generation of public health leaders to impact global health issues.
Public Health postdoctoral scholars at AIU have multiple potential career paths, including but not limited to epidemiology, health policy, biostatistics, global health, program evaluation, and public health advocacy. These, and similar, paths could also include academic-based research, grant writing, clinical research coordination, and data-based health interventions. Our program develops and prepares postdoctoral fellows with the skills and experience to assume leadership roles at universities, research institutions, governmental agencies, non-profits, and private industry.
AIU has postdoctoral fellows conducting research in public health access to a wide variety of advanced tools to assist, data analysis, the research process, data visualization, and project management. These resources position fellows to do meritorious research, work collaboratively, and take the public health research and translate that data into research-based solutions.
At AIU, Public Health postdoctoral researchers can expand their professional connections by joining its global and regional associations, which offer networking communities, advocacy networks, and continuing‐education opportunities. Engaging in these usually informal associations can keep you informed of the latest developments in public health, inform policy conversations, and connect and collaborate with colleagues across relevant disciplines and around the world.
Individuals who seek post-doctoral membership in the field of Public Health at AIU must have a doctorate (PhD, DrPH, MD/PhD or equivalent), coupled with applicable background training and experience in a relevant field including epidemiology, biostatistics, public health, health policy, or another quantitative field. Candidates must show evidence of a strong research track record (e.g., research publications, presentations at conferences, or a defended thesis) with a detailed CV, a research interest statement, and at least two academic references. If candidates were educated outside of India, they must supply evidence of a certified copy of their degree and transcripts, and if relevant, proof of English-language proficiency. Finally, candidates will also identify a faculty mentor/mentoring group at AIU that aligns with their intended interests and provide a short proposal outlining how their post-doctoral work will inform public health research and practice.

The goal of the cost for a post-doctoral position in Public Health at this institution is to keep the position affordable and flexible.
