The Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences at AIU comprises a wide-ranging course of study that enables undergraduate students to begin a career in health sciences or many other areas. By completing core courses and topics of the Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences such as anatomy and physiology, health promotion and wellness, epidemiology, health policy and public health, healthcare management, ethics, methods in health sciences research, and several other topics and core courses, the undergraduate experience in health sciences provides a comprehensive overview of many diverse and essential areas in the health science area.

Orientation Courses

Upon entering the Health Sciences discipline at our university, students will take a set of orientation courses that will guarantee that they have the foundational knowledge they need to be successful. Insight into the components of Health Sciences and the variety of career options will allow students to be aware of the scope of the Health Sciences faculty intra- and inter- faculty career options. 

As students take their introductory courses, they will have an awareness of the interdisciplinary nature of Health Sciences career options where a variety of disciplines come together to address contemporary health issues. Students will gain awareness of topics such as the history of healthcare and health professions, ethical issues related to health professions, and how technology affects health professions today. These orientation courses will inform students to develop the knowledge they need to be engaged in their academic journey in our Health Sciences university in pursuit of health sciences-related careers, and as a new and exciting professional domain.

Research Projects

As we continue to strive for excellence in our Health Sciences bachelor’s program, we encourage students to engage with research projects as an impactful way to learn more about healthcare studies while advancing the field. The medical degree research project is an important component of the program, as it allows students to assess how and if they can apply the theory covered in their studies in practice in the healthcare field. 

Students can explore a variety of topics related to healthcare research under the supervision of our faculty who have a strong background and experience in healthcare research. Healthcare research examines a wide variety of topics from epidemiology to an analysis of health administration. By engaging in a healthcare research project, students develop transferable skills in research practice, analytical skills, and the complexities of researching in a healthcare system. Publication – Within our Biomedical program of the Bachelors in Health Sciences, students have the opportunity to excel academically and have their research and perspectives shared through student publications. The goal of student publications is to provide students an opportunity to publish their findings, viewpoints, and contributions within the health sciences. Students can use different types of student publications, whether it is a scientific manuscript, newsletter, or online publication, to share their project and connect with the wider community of health studies students and practitioners. 

These student publications demonstrate the academic excellence of our possible future biomedical practitioners and teachers, and help build a community for innovation, teamwork, and knowledge sharing among our students. Thesis Defense for Bachelor's in Health Sciences

The thesis defence is an essential milestone for our Bachelor in Health Sciences graduates, taking into consideration the dedication and effort they exerted towards years of study and investigation towards all things health sciences. The thesis defence showcases students’ knowledge and expertise in an area of study; students are free to choose farm, community health, occupational therapy, physical therapy, or any specialized area of study within health sciences. In fact, the Health Sciences curriculum introduces students to contemporary AI tools such as ChatGPT, DALL-E, and Stable Diffusion to enhance their learning and their comprehension and application to concepts in healthcare, public health, and health service management. AI tools provide students the opportunity to think creatively and confidently about real-world health problems.

For example, ChatGPT offers students as part of existing learning experiences, a platform for thinking and discussing health sciences majors and brainstorming collaboratively about new ideas and exciting solutions to urgent and chronic health care issues. DALL-E allows students an imaginative visual dimension when reviewing a project, allowing for complex ideas to be conceived and visualized. Stable Diffusion fundamentally shifts the way we approach the analysis and interpretation of health data. This really allows students to visualize and generate patterns of health data that allows for enhanced decision-making in public health and health service management.
