How a Brain Tumor Transformed Tony Robbins, and the 6 Health Strategies That Fueled His $620 Million Legacy

Thirty-two years ago, Tony Robbins— the most well-known motivational speaker and peak performance coach on the planet— faced a moment that would change his life and the lives of millions forever.

In the peak of his early career, Robbins could not be stopped. He was filling arenas with rabid fans, coaching elite athletes, advising world leaders, and publishing best-selling books that changed the face of the self-help industry. To the millions of fans and followers he had, Robbins looked invincible. However, it was not so in reality; the situation was worse.

Tony Robbins noticed that his body was not behaving steadily. He was constantly gaining weight in spite of leading a highly strict and organized life. He was gaining weight steadily with his routine and strict discipline. His energy levels were swinging from peak to valley. It wasn’t long for doctors to discover the problem; Robbins had discovered a pituitary brain tumor that had been producing abnormal levels of growth hormone.

Most other people would have had a really hard time wrapping their head around this diagnosis. The normal recommendation from medical professionals was to remove the pituitary gland and tumor immediately. But Robbins does not prescribe to whatever most people think, say or have done. He believes that how wonderful your life can be is closely aligned to how well you think and make decisions. Robbins took the opposite path of most people he practiced and he was unwaveringly committed to always taking responsibility for his health and never turning it over to someone else.

He did the unthinkable and embarked on an exhausting quest for answers, diving into human biology, employing the world’s best functional medicine medical specialists, experimenting with diet, fasting, and cutting-edge therapies. He literally employed his body and mind in a laboratory of modification.

Over the next three decades, that decision to assume responsibility for his health rather than handing over his health to someone else became, today, the framework of what he teaches today.

Today, Robbins, at 65 years old, is a picture of health and thriving. Not only is Robbins healthy, he built an empire over 620 million and coached Bill Clinton, a president; a billionaire Marc Benioff; and Olympic champion Serena Williams. His energy, emotion and endurance are well-recorded; Robbins at any audience on stage can speak for 12 straight hours and his energy and emotion about it are legendary.

So what did he learn from nearing death? And therefore what can we learn from Robbins?

Here are Robbins six most powerful health strategies- the exact strategies, or at least principles thereof, that empowered him to battle illness and age him for thirty years at the highest levels.

1. Embrace Radical Control over Your Health

Upon being diagnosed with a brain tumor, Robbins was told by doctors the only thing to do was surgery. Robbins did not sit comfortably and accept this as his only reality; he began asking better questions.

“What is causing this? What are my alternatives? What can I do to help my body heal?”

As you might expect, these questions began him on a journey of radical self-education. Robbins reported a realization that most people give away their own power as soon as they are given a diagnosis – they relinquish their health to the medical system. “But healing truly starts when you take ownership”  he noted.

He started working on the problem very early; consulted different categories of specialists – from endocrinologists to alternative headers and so on. He acquired comprehensive knowledge about stress management, nutrition, and cellular regeneration. After continued discussions with them, he got the fantastic news that the tumor he is having is not metastatic but benign; growing gradually. On their suggestions, Tonny Robbins started organizing his lifestyle, monitored his health regularly, and also leveraged natural therapies. By doing all of this, he could maintain the stability and health of his tumor for an extended period of time; causing him to have surgery. Remember, no one provides you these thoughts on your health more than you do. Doctors provide you with invaluable assistance and become a trusted confidant, but in the end, it is all your choice.

Robbins is fond of saying, “You must become the CEO of your own health.” Philosophically, Robbins has built books around this idea.

  1. Nourishing Your Cells, Not Your Cravings

Robbins is known for his high energy levels and claims that much of it stems from how he eats, rather than specifically what he eats.

He spent years following a plant centric diet which emphasizes green, healthy fats, and clean protein; but later transitioned to include more fish and high-quality omega-3’s after discovering he had mercury toxicity due to his excessive consumption of tuna (a reminder that there can be downsides to even the healthiest of habits).

His current approach to eating is quite simple, though very powerful: eat to energize, not to entertain.

Often you will find Robbins drinking nutrient-rich smoothies, combining alkaline greens, and engaging in hydration practices for the optimization of his cellular function. Food is information and tells your body how to act.

In Life Force, Robbins shares valuable insight from some of the world’s leading longevity researchers, such as Dr. David Sinclair and Dr. Mark Hyman, who will tell you that the keys to aging vibrantly is reducing inflammation throughout the body, stabilizing blood sugar levels, and supporting mitochondrial wellness.

The summary statement is this: every bite you take is either fueling disease or fueling vitality. Eat things that will serve your future and not just serve your immediate pleasure.

  1. Harness the Power of Motion

Robbins’ day does not start with a cup of coffee but with cold plunges, followed by movement.

Every morning, Robbins wakes his system up by jumping into a plunge pool with a temperature of 57 degrees (or colder). Cold exposure reduces inflammation, gets the blood flowing, and stimulates the nervous system for performance right away. That moment of being shocked into cold water creates an instant state change that is in total agreement with Robbins’ philosophy that “emotion is created by motion”.

Then Robbins gets sweaty on the rebounder (mini-trampoline workouts) or engages in resistance training, or walks outside to enhance movement. Plus, Robbins also does stretching and breathwork to keep his flexibility and energy throughout his demanding schedule.

His point is: your physiology is by far the easiest way to change your psychology.

When you feel mentally stuck, move your body. Robbins has employed this principle to help millions break their trains of thought associated with depression, anxiety, and low motivation. The moment you change your physical state, you can change your emotional state.

4. Leverage Recovery and Sleep

In the earlier years of his journey as a wellness advocate, Robbins would frequently brag about his ability to get away with only 4 hours of sleep. After facing a significant personal health challenge, Robbins would end up deciding that particular path of lifestyle simply was not working for him anymore.

When Robbins talks about recovery, he now recognizes this as a sacred practice.

Tony Robbins would consistently keep tabs on the quality of his sleep and would also engage with various evening rituals that would assist with relaxation and would calm the nervous system and brain. He recollected that he voluntarily stopped drinking coffee after sunset, would do gratitude journaling, and made sure that the sleep environment was comfortable, cool, and dark.

As Robbins says, “You can’t pour from an empty cup. Rest is not a reward. It is a necessity.”

Modern science corroborates him on that.Sleep is when the brain detoxes, hormones are rebalanced and the body repairs. Robbins teaches us that peak performance is not about pushing harder but rather recovering smarter.

  1. Biohack, but Make Sure you Practice the Basics

Tony Robbins has enormous access to more advanced medical technology than anyone… stem cell therapies, plasma exchange, insights into gene editing, and anti-aging research, etc. His book, Life Force, is a playbook of the future of human healthcare.

Despite all of the access he has, Robbins will be the first to tell you the basics still count for the most.

Nothing can discount drinking water, choosing whole foods, managing stress, and living life with a sense of purpose.

When Robbins received a stem cell treatment for severe shoulder pain he had suffered for 15 years chronic pain due to an injury, he said it was a “miraculous” healing. He did say the treatment worked only because his body was already prepared from years of eating the right foods, moving, and doing the right thinking.

The point again is that technology is a tool and not a substitute for consistency and discipline.

In the beginning, simple… water, sunlight in the morning, emotional stability, and daily movement. With the proper foundation, biohacking can be added with strength rather than desperation.

  1. Living With Purpose—Because Passion is Healing!

Perhaps Robbins’ most significant health tip has little to do with biology and is actually more about psychology.

Science says that when people have a strong purpose and community, chronic health conditions are much lower, and people live longer. For Robbins, purpose is the ultimate fuel.

If there was ever a person who could retire, Robbins most certainly can/have; with net worth exceeding $620 million, dozens of companies, and multiple bestselling books, he is still of service. He feeds over 1 billion people through his partnership with Feeding America, and still leads live events that have transformed millions of lives.

He often says, “the secret to living is giving.”

That mindset keeps one young as passion energizes your biochemistry. When you live for something greater than yourself, your cells literally vibrate with energy…

While nutrition, sleep, and technology are important, in Robbins’ mind, the most important key to longevity is the emotional vitality of love, gratitude, and service.

Conclusion: Health Is the Greatest Wealth

Tony Robbins’ experience of being diagnosed with a brain tumor that was described as potentially deadly and linked to cause a lot of pain, was not just a matter of surviving.  It was a call to action to transform himself.  He would not accept being a victim of circumstances. He chose to become a student of life, a master of his biology, and a testimony to what is possible when you decide to take control.

He laid out six strategies for vibrant health, that are not just intentions for health, but a prescription for a life of power, passion, and longevity.  His six strategies were ownership, nutrition, movement, recovery, fundamentals, and purpose.

Tony Robbins’ mantra is:

“It is not events that factor into your life.  It is what you do with the events that create your destiny.”

Thirty two years ago a brain tumor changed Tony Robbins forever. However, it did not end his story, it began his greatest transformation.

He also imparted to us a time-honored lesson and principle which we all need to adopt into our lives: your health is your most valuable asset. Cherish it, invest in it, and treat EVERY day as if your health matters!
