The study focuses on gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) as a significant public health issue in southeastern Nigeria, aiming to estimate its prevalence and identify associated risk factors. GDM is defined as any degree of impaired glucose tolerance first recognized during pregnancy, and while many women return to normal glucose metabolism postpartum, they remain at risk for developing type 2 diabetes later in life, as do their offspring.

The research highlights that the prevalence of GDM is notably high in Nigeria, with contributing factors including being overweight or obese, having a history of macrosomic babies, a family history of diabetes, and previous pregnancy complications such as stillbirth or miscarriage. The study underscores the importance of universal screening for GDM in the region to prevent adverse maternal and perinatal outcomes, as well as to mitigate future diabetes risks for both mothers and children.

The methodology involved a systematic review and meta-analysis of published studies on GDM in Africa, utilizing updated international diagnostic criteria. Data were meticulously extracted and analyzed using statistical software to estimate the pooled prevalence and odds ratios for various risk factors. The study also assessed the quality of the included studies, noting that many had a high or moderate risk of bias, which could affect the reliability of the findings.

The findings indicate a significant gap in knowledge regarding GDM in African countries, with only a small percentage of the continent represented in existing research. The study calls for more epidemiological studies to provide reliable data on GDM prevalence and to inform health policies and management protocols. It emphasizes the need for continuous training of healthcare workers and a shift in focus towards addressing high birth weight and macrosomia, which are often overlooked in favor of low birth weight concerns.

In conclusion, the study advocates for improved screening practices, the development of simpler diagnostic strategies, and increased awareness of the long-term implications of GDM for maternal and child health. It highlights the necessity of addressing the economic burden that GDM places on healthcare systems, particularly in resource-limited settings like Nigeria.
