The purpose of the doctor of mining engineering at Atlantic International University is to provide individuals with the opportunity for comprehensive advanced theoretical knowledge through independent project research in the areas of mineral resource extraction, mine planning and design, and sustainable mining operation (including geomechanics, resource estimation, ventilation systems, and environmental management). Atlantic International University’s Doctor of Mining Engineering program includes comprehensive core courses and advanced topics in modern mining system expertise and resource management. Major areas of study include (but aren’t limited to) mine planning/design; rock mechanics; mineral processing; ventilation engineering; drilling/blasting technology; surface/underground methods; geostatistics; and mineral resource estimation. In addition, PhD in mining engineering students will study environmental impact assessment, sustainable mining practices, mine safety management; and mining economics.

The programs will introduce an interdisciplinary approach to learning and provide the opportunity for self-directed study, and provide students with an understanding of how to create and manage their own customized curriculum. Ultimately, mining engineering doctoral program orientation will prepare students to succeed in navigating their programs with confidence, utilize the available resources for learning, and successfully participate in advanced study and research.
In the program, students engage with Research Projects as a key aspect of the learning experience, using solidifying concepts learned in class to handle actual challenges faced by those employed in the same field as the student. Students are assigned to do guided research exploring unique topics; will analyze recent trends happening in the field; and provide other innovative options for those experiencing the issues related to the topic being researched. By completing these doctor of mining engineering projects, the student will demonstrate and improve their critical thinking skills; be engaged in independent phd in mineral engineering research; and create and/or apply scientific and analytical processes when conducting research.

AIU has developed a flexible and research-driven Doctor of Mining Engineering program that is focused on providing individualized instruction to help prepare graduates for successful careers in various mining engineering fields, including extraction of minerals, safety in mining, sustainable management of resources, and advanced technologies in mining. All doctoral candidates will participate in self-direction models of learning that allow them the ability to develop their area of expertise during the course of their doctoral studies, based on what they want to accomplish in the career.
The student experience includes accessing an auditorium of mineral exploration academic resources, research databases, and opportunities for global networking through the use of AIU’s virtual campus and working with faculty & professional advisors from across the globe. This unique teaching and learning model was developed to foster the development of critical thinking, independent research, as well as practical problem solving skills. The goal is for all doctoral candidates to gain advanced knowledge and be able to contribute to the continuing evolution of contemporary mining and resource issues.
Students who participate in the Community & Social component of the AIU Doctorate in Mining Engineering program use their education to address real world challenges in social, economic and environmental spheres related to the mining sector. Their efforts include supporting and promoting responsible mining, the sustainable use of resources, and community development in communities impacted by mining.

Each year AIU organizes graduation ceremonies where the students can assist and share their experiences with fellow students and academic members Participation in the ceremony is optional, the day’s events include conferences, research presentations, group meetings, networking, lunch and formal dinner.

Graduates of this program can choose from lots of jobs in fields like industry, research, consulting, and higher education. Some examples of job types that would be available include: Mining Engineer, Mine Planning Engineer, Mineral Processing Specialist, Geotechnical Engineer, Environmental Mining Consultant, Safety & Risk Management Specialist, Mining Operations Manager, and Resource Development Consultant.
Other jobs available to graduates include Research Scientists and University Professors or Technical Advisors to support sustainable mining and help develop and interpret regulations. As professionals gain advanced knowledge and expertise, they become strong leaders within their organizations, which allows them to contribute toward developing new technologies for underground mining, responsibly extracting resources from the earth, and managing the supply of minerals at a global level among public and private organizations.
In this course of study, students will have an opportunity to obtain hands-on experience with the newest digital tools that are in use today within the mining engineering profession, such as for geological modeling, mine planning drawing, estimating of minerals and mineral resources, and operational management.
The software packages used in this program are representative of the commercial use of the software by engineers when analyzing geological data, designing efficient mine layout drawings, optimizing extraction procedures, and ensuring safety and environmental compliance. Using these types of technological tools will prepare graduates with the essential skill sets that are necessary to effectively participate in exploration, mine development and mining operations in the international marketplace.
The mining engineering profession is significantly influenced by professional association organizations because of their involvement in the research process, support for continuing education (professional development), facilitating collaboration within the mining community, and advocating for responsible practices in regard to mining.
Mining organisation professional associations provide many resources for professionals in the mining industry such as publications relevant to the mining sector; opportunities to attend conferences; training and surface mining educational opportunities; connections through networking to have current information on new and emerging technologies, best practices (for example: safety standards) as well as current mining technology and environmental legislation.
The way you can get accepted into this program is very broad and open and includes anyone who is willing to study and have various post-secondary educational backgrounds and work experiences looking for opportunities to expand their skills and knowledge in the mining industry and the related fields surrounding it. Most of the time, applicants will have a prior educational degree from a credible institution, as well as a high interest in mining, mineral resource/engineering type work, or another similar field of study. In the process of accepting an application, the applicant will most likely have to submit such items as school transcripts, resume/curriculum vitae, and a statement explaining their educational, career goals and/or purpose for entering this program.
In addition, if the applicant has a significant amount of time spent doing work in mining, geology, engineering, or some form of industrial activity, this will help strengthen their application. The program uses an evaluative approach that is supportive to the applicant’s ability to pursue independent research and thinking, as well as assist with some aspect to help move forward with a career based on developing sustainable mining practices.
This program was created to be straightforward, easy to apply to and will benefit many diverse communities of student (both in terms of professional and educational background). There is an online form that you must fill out with general personal information and general academic information before being reviewed by the admissions staff. At that point, if they would like more information on you and/or your abilities they will ask for additional documentation such as transcripts, resume and/or CV and an educational/career goal statement. After reviewing all of this information the admissions team will provide assistance to the eligible candidates who have been accepted into the program by assigning them an academic advisor that will assist the candidate in creating an individualized study plan and help with the enrollment process.
AIU is committed to making a quality education accessible and affordable through a variety of financial aid and scholarship options. To help students better manage their tuition expenses, AIU provides an array of flexible tuition payment options, including many different forms of scholarships to qualified students. There are several different forms of scholarships available to students based on academic achievement, career accomplishments or service to the community; or on the basis of demonstrated need. The majority of students will qualify for partial scholarships that can significantly lower their cost of attendance and provide additional payment options over time while they pursue their degree programs. AIU’s unique approach will provide many students, including those who are currently employed, those who are living outside the United States, or those who have other barriers, with the opportunity to obtain an associate’s degree or bachelor’s degree without financial barriers.

Mining Engineers who hold a PhD may receive annual salaries between $100,000-$165,000, based on factors such as experience level, job responsibilities, and geographic area. Professionals working at the senior level of mining engineering salaries include: directors of consulting firms; research; or rest; and upper management careers in Mining Engineering have a tendency to earn outliers of the above range.
