Topics covered include energy generation, grid stability, types of batteries, key performance metrics, and management systems like BMS. The importance of proper sizing, operational planning, and applications such as peak shaving and frequency support were emphasized. Practical insights highlight how BESS improves grid reliability, efficiency, and supports renewable energy integration.

The class provided a comprehensive overview of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and their critical role in integrating renewable energy sources into the electrical grid. Key concepts discussed include how electrical grids operate, ensuring power generation matches load consumption, and the challenges associated with renewable sources such as solar, wind, hydro, biomass, geothermal, and tidal energy. These challenges include fluctuations, power quality issues, and energy losses, necessitating mitigation strategies like control algorithms, load forecasting, and predictive analysis.
The class explained different battery types—primary and secondary (rechargeable)—and their applications, such as energy arbitrage, peak shaving, voltage support, and load regulation. Important battery parameters like state of charge (SOC), depth of charge (DOD), energy density, power density, cycle life, and maturity were detailed. The purpose of BESS in renewable energy is to store excess energy during high generation periods and supply it during low production, enhancing grid stability by maintaining frequency and voltage.
