The Master of Sustainable Architecture program at the AIU offers and academic and interdisciplinary curriculum aimed at providing the student with advanced knowledge and understanding of the principles, technologies and practices of sustainable design strategies. There are rigorous core courses on Green Building Design, Environmental Systems and Energy Efficiency, Sustainable Materials and Construction Methods, and Climate-Responsive Architecture. Additionally, students have the opportunity to cover Urban Ecology and Resilient Cities, integrating Renewable Energy into Architecture, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), and Sustainable Project Management. Students will learn to think critically through research courses covering Bioclimatic Design, Passive Solar Architecture, and Sustainability Assessment Tools, and the program positions graduates to drive new changes in the architecture profession.

Orientation Courses

The first step for students in the Master’s in Sustainable Architecture program at AIU is to engage in the orientation courses. The purpose of the orientation courses is to help students form a philosophical and academic base to build from at the start of their learning journey. The orientation courses contain a Philosophy of Education course that outlines the core philosophical principles of self-directed, purpose-driven education that the university encourages;  a Fundamentals of Sustainable Development course that presents a high-level perspective on sustainability goals and challenges faced globally.

Academic Evaluation where students can assess their existing knowledge and professional experience; and Research Methodology encourages students to develop a structure for critical appraising and methodical inquiry. Research Projects

Thesis Defense for Masters in Sustainable Architecture

The Thesis Defense is an important academic milestone of the Master`s in Sustainable Architecture program at AIU. The Thesis Defense allows students to showcase and defend their original research or design project to a panel of academic advisors and experts. Students of green architecture, during the defense process, will not only exhibit the sustainability values, processes and innovations of their work, but they will also demonstrate their skills in critical thinking and problem solving when challenges arise.

The defense for climate-resilient architecture program is a formal verification of the academic rigor of the thesis as well as preparation for actual professional presentations, proposals and leadership roles associated with sustainable architecture. Live Classes

AIU’s Career Center plays a vital role in assisting students of the Master’s in Sustainability Architecture to move from academic study to professional practice. AIU Master graduates in Sustainable Architecture will have a wide selection of important and relevant career opportunities in architecture and sustainability globally. Examples include Sustainable Architect, Urban Planner, Green Building Consultant, Environmental Design Specialist, but also as LEED or BREEAM Accredited Professionals or Sustainability Project Managers. Many of our graduates are more likely to work as Policy Advisers, Climate-Responsive Design Specialists, or Academic Researcher studying change in architecture. Masters in Sustainable Architecture Requirements

The program accepts applicants with established academic or professional experience in architecture, design, engineering, environmental studies or closely-related subjects. Generally, an applicant is required to have a recognized bachelor’s degree or equivalent, along with relevant work experience or interest in sustainable design and environmental stewardship. Within the application, a statement of purpose, a current résumé or CV, and transcripts will be required. As part of the application process, you may also be asked to submit previous work (portfolio) to determine creative and technical skills. Our admissions process seeks motivated, purposeful candidates who seek to contribute to sustainable architecture.
