Dissertation & Thesis Defense

The capstone requirement for students in the Bachelor’s in Public Administration program at AIU is the completion of a dissertation or thesis that extends from course based knowledge of concepts into practical application to meet real issues. Faculty mentors help students choose a topic in one of the many concepts from previous courses to study in depth: public policy analysis, administrative reform, etc. Students apply rigorous research and critical analysis to make practical recommendations.

After completion, the undergraduate public administration student must defend the thesis in a live virtual defense before an academic panel in which he/she describes the research process or findings, while demonstrating knowledge and mastery of the topic. Completing this process validates to the students the work involved in producing their dissertation or thesis, while serving as a confidence-building exercise that very clearly connects to communication, and the creation of a professional disposition ready for the work world.
