At AIU, the Associate in Sustainable Tourism program offers a rich and broad curriculum that will lay the foundation of tourism management and sustainability. This program directs your studies toward core content, including Principles of Sustainable Tourism, Ecotourism Management, Environmental Impact Assessment, Community-Based Tourism, and Tourism Marketing Strategies.The range of peripheral content to study sustainable tourism will feature: Cultural Heritage Conservation, Responsible Travel Planning, Natural Resources Management, and Green Businesses. The Tourism and Sustainability program is designed to offer flexibility and learner-directed study, allowing you to choose sustainable travel education option modules relevant to your interests.Students of sustainable tourism associate degree are empowered and inspired by their choices; they could develop their courses based on associate in eco tourism career, skills applications, whereby responsible tourism is central to their lives or educational aspirations.
When students begin the Associate in Sustainable Tourism program at AIU, they take a variety of orientation courses to prepare them for a successful learning journey at the university level and in their personal lives. Orientation activities included Principles of Andragogy which was designed to orient students to AIU’s self-directed learning expectations, and a Philosophy of Education course where students considered their own values and educational goals coming into the program.
There were other modules as well such as: Fundamentals of Academic Research, Time Management and Study Skills, and Introduction to Distance Learning Tools that prepare students with tools and skills they may need to be successful in the flexible and online learning atmosphere at AIU. The orientation courses help green tourism students get their educational journey off to a strong start and assist them in building a solid foundation for what will hopefully be a meaningful and transformational journey.
The Associate in Sustainable Tourism courses at AIU encourages learners to pursue meaningful research projects that engage with academic theory and bridge the gap between abstract learning and tangible action. Students are able to investigate a wide array of topics such as Sustainable Tourism Practices in Developing Nations, Ecotourism and Biodiversity Conservation, Carbon Footprint Reduction in the Travel Industry, Community Economic Empowerment through Tourism, and Evaluating the Effectiveness of Eco-certification Programs. These projects add to the learner’s critical thinking and problem solving ability and allow students to contribute to new knowledge and original thinking in the field of sustainability and tourism. All research projects are interpersonal and personalized to the student, recalling everything AIU works from their andragogic model focusing on the learner, and looks for learning to incorporate the learner’s interests, lived experiences in a professional context, and career aspirations.
Publication – Students enrolled in the Associate in Sustainable Tourism program at AIU are inspired to give back to their local and global academic community, by sharing their knowledge and experiences, via student publications, and to develop an ethos of inquiry and academic contribution mindset. Learners can publish research papers, case studies, articles, and sustainability reports in AIU’s digital library, online journals, and other academic and dissemination avenues. The thesis defense is an adaptable and liberating process that matches AIU’s model of andragogy, where students can creatively present their findings via various means such as pre-recorded video, written presentation, or through a virtual meeting. AIU Campus Mundi is a monthly magazine that gathers the most notable news and information about the university and its members in one convenient place. The magazine allows our community to be well informed, involved and keep in tough regardless of their geographic location. Each year AIU organizes graduation ceremonies where the students can assist and share their experiences with fellow students and academic members Participation in the ceremony is optional, the day’s events include conferences, research presentations, group meetings, networking, lunch and formal dinner.
Symposiums are integral to all Associate in Sustainable Tourism program viewers at AIU to discuss and share knowledge from a variety of professorial and industry perspectives. Participants of a symposium included individuals at the forefront of the proper sustainable-tourism dialogue; representatives from study circles with thought-breaking research that sought sustainable tourism alternatives in their academic practice.

The Career Center includes career counseling and job-search support, as well as organizational and networking components, to facilitate students’ career opportunities in the eco-tourism and destination planning sectors, hospitality management sectors within tourism, and as advocates of environmental awareness and reduction of eco-footprints. It also prepares students to write resumes, interview effectively, and prepare for entrepreneurship and sustainability aspects of travel. The Associate in Sustainable Tourism engages partners from leading sectoral organizations such as the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC), which develops widely accepted sustainability standards for travel and tourism, the International Ecotourism Society (TIES), which is passionate about nature-based tourism and responsible travel, Sustainable Travel International, which develops interesting programs and tools to minimize the environmental impact of tourism, and Tourism Cares, which provides real-life conservation projects in addition to community-related initiatives.
Through these organizations, students participate in real-life sustainability standards, mentorship by experts in the field and opportunities to contribute positively to environmental and social impact projects.
AIU accepts admission into the Associate in Sustainable Tourism program from individuals who demonstrate a commitment to environmental stewardship and desire to enter the tourism industry in a sustainable manner. It is required that applicants complete a high school diploma or equivalent (or have completed less than 36 hours of post-secondary education). A basic understanding of English is also desired with access to a computer and internet connection for online learning. Prior education in tourism or experience in Environmental Studies would be beneficial, but not required. AIU welcomes applicants from all backgrounds as a way to further broaden our global learning environment with a dedication toward sustainability and positive change.
AIU is committed to access to education and has a range of funding options available to students who enroll in the Associate in Sustainable Tourism program. Scholarships, Payment Plans and tuition assistance can be all possible for eligible candidates who fit the academic merit, financial hardship and sustainability-by-choice criteria. AIU believes education to be a human right, allowing for funding options to represent individuals from varying socioeconomic backgrounds and their ability to pursue individual ambitions free from financial burdens. Admissions personnel work collaboratively with applicants to identify a funding plan suitable to their circumstances, resulting in students, their families, and their friends being able to create a future of responsible tourism whether globally or just in their local communities.
AIU’s Associate in Sustainable Tourism program is designed to be accessible and at a low price point with a tuition model that is inclusive for students from all backgrounds. AIU developed a new payment method to a unique schooling experience. We do not require an upfront lump sum payment, rather pay over time throughout the duration of the degree. This academic payment model will offer our students an opportunity to develop personally and academically without fear of being unable to continue the course out of financial hardship. AIU has made every effort to ensure that all students have timely access to all academic course materials, including books at no additional charges.
The Associate in Sustainable Tourism program touches on a wide variety of subject areas that prepare students with the core knowledge and skills which they can utilize to create responsible and environmentally sustainable tourism. The essential scope of this program is to introduce students to sustainable tourism, ecotourism and environmental conservation and community-based tourism.
