We all have something that makes us stand out, something supposedly unique in each person, a small light within that, although it may remain hidden, has the potential to change not only our lives on a personal level but also everything around us.
An excellent example of this is the story of a young boy of just 3 years old named Lyonya Shilovsky, an extraordinary Russian child with a talent for drums, who stole the show with his performance. Today, this talent has led him to become a drum teacher at the age of 10, impacting the lives of many.
This video that went around the world as the case of “the child prodigy” is not simply a viral video on social media; it is a powerful way to bring us back down to earth and remind us that talent knows no age, origin, or limits. The great challenge is not the fact of having talent, but when and how we discover it, and what we will do with it once it is found.
It is also important to note that talent becomes something much greater when it shifts from being individual to becoming a driving force for social change. When people discover their abilities, they develop passion and discipline, paving an inspiring path for others and, in doing so, creating a much greater impact than they had imagined.
It is very common for talent to arise from the mix of natural inclinations and curiosity. It can manifest in many ways, whether music, art, leadership, technological innovation, empathy, or problem-solving skills. That young drummer shows us that talents appear in childhood, and especially that when nurtured enough, they have the power to move and inspire others.
But at the same time, we must remember that it is common for many to keep their talents dormant, almost completely forgotten. In fact, the traditional education system prioritizes standard content rather than discovering the individual capacities of students. Therefore, self-exploration is important at all stages of life. So start trying different activities, reviewing what you enjoy, and always keeping an open mind along the way.
This is a great process of self-knowledge and often a true act of courage. More than just recognizing the things you are good at, you must also dare to share them with others. That step is the initial exposure, which allows others to be inspired, learn, and benefit from it.
An incredible example of this is reflected in activist Malala Yousafzai, a human being with a great ability to communicate and defend her ideas in the process. She not only became a symbol of female education, but she is also a transformative voice in the global debate on the rights of the youngest, leaving a mark that goes beyond personal achievement, turning it into a collective cause.
The combination of talent and discipline is a mix that generates great impact
It may seem like a clash, but the reality is that talent alone is not enough. This is evidenced by the large number of people throughout history who were forgotten without achieving their goals, because they never accompanied their gift with perseverance, discipline, practice, consistency, and resilience. These are the essential ingredients that will transform your ability into actions with lasting impact.
In that sense, let us see talent as a seed; it has all the potential and many possibilities, but it needs care, patience, and dedication to one day become a tree bearing good fruit. There are clear differences between someone who simply has talent and decides to remain stuck there and someone who transcends with that talent; it is the ability to apply it more consistently and direct it toward a greater purpose.
Talent: how to move from me to us?
Talent takes on great value when it is shared and when there is feedback from the people around us. Returning to the initial example, that drumming prodigy was able to inspire other children to explore the art of music, and just like him, elsewhere, a leader with communication skills manages to bring several communities together for a common cause.
That is where the true value of talent lies. To be able to transcend individuality to leave a legacy for the collective. However, it is vital to have these people motivating others, so they seek their talents, seek their own essence, creating a virtuous circle of growth.
Apple: from creativity to innovation
Steve Jobs had an incredible talent for envisioning the future and combining technology with design. The great ability to imagine and materialize products that were simple, intuitive, and beautifully made. This profoundly changed the technology industry. The story of this man goes beyond business success. Today, Apple has become a company that symbolizes creativity, encouraging many to think differently.
Likewise, the social impact of this talent can be seen not only in the technology we use but also in the way that technology has become more accessible, intuitive, and integrated into our daily lives. All thanks to Jobs’ personal talent, this has become a cultural movement that inspires others around the world.
Patagonia, business talent as an extension of social conscience
Yvon Chouinard is the founder of Patagonia, who combined his talent for outdoor sports with environmental commitment. A dream that began as a clothing company for climbers transformed into a global benchmark. Today, Patagonia not only makes products but also uses its business qualities to try to fight the current climate crisis, giving a large percentage of its profits to environmental causes. Thus, talent translates not only into economic returns but into building something that will remain for society and future generations.
We already see examples in today’s society
People like Greta Thunberg, with her talent for communication as an activist, who was able to mobilize millions of young people by raising awareness around climate change. For his part, athlete Lionel Messi, beyond just playing soccer, has worked to use his sporting talent to create a foundation that helps vulnerable children around the world.
Finally, the renowned Elon Musk also shares his talent by using his vision for innovation. He was able to drive advances in electric mobility and space exploration, even challenging entire industries. These cases confirm that talent, when directed toward the common good, has the ability to transform generations.
It is time to unleash your talent!
It is incredible the impact that talent can generate, and the best part is that it is not about being unique or super special; it depends more on intention and, of course, the actions that accompany that intention. Just as a young person with musical gifts can sustain the inspiration of an entire community of students, in the same way, you can embark on a path with new ideas, standing out in what you do best, what inspires you, and makes you smile, and in that moment, you can transform into a sustainable project over time.
Remember that we all have something we stand out in, something we are good at, that is undeniable, but the real challenge is being able to develop it after identifying it and putting it at the service of others around us. In this way, we stop being an individual with an isolated skill, to become part of the change that inspires and, above all transforms society.
