90% of the goods around the world move through the shipping industry. These cargo ships leave environmental footprint. Despite being more efficient per ton-mile than trucks or planes, the sheer scale of the maritime industry makes it responsible for nearly 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions. It is a figure that’s only expected to rise as other sectors decarbonize. But a group of innovators are trying to revive a centuries-old power source to chart a more sustainable future: wind.

Shipping is, relatively, a very efficient transport industry according to Rogier Eggers, a researcher at the Dutch maritime institute MARIN. But as the rest of society transitions to clean energy, shipping’s share of emissions will grow unless we act.
For Eggers and others leading the charge in maritime sustainability, the solution isn’t buried in some futuristic fuel or exotic tech. Instead, it’s floating on the breeze. Wind-assisted propulsion (WASP) is seeing a renaissance, thanks to a blend of old-school inspiration and cutting-edge innovation.
In partnership with yachting experts and racing veterans from the America’s Cup and Ocean Race, Eggers’ team has been translating high-performance sail tech into scalable solutions for commercial cargo vessels.
Among the most promising innovations are WindWings—rigid, foldable sails developed by BAR Technologies and now being deployed on a large scale by Union Maritime, a UK-based chemical tanker operator. With plans to outfit 34 newbuild vessels, including 14 LR2s and 12 chemical tankers, Union Maritime is positioning itself at the forefront of the green shipping revolution.
According to secondary research, each WindWing promises to save an average of 1.5 tons of fuel per day, dramatically cutting COâ‚‚ emissions. This approach is to take the right initiative toward the emissions goals and setting a new standard for the industry.
Similarly, Norsepower tested and deployed rotor sails—cylindrical structures that spin to create lift through the Magnus effect to reduce fuel consumption by 5–20% and the best part is, they are already being used on commercial ships navigating the North Sea and beyond.
The voyage of Pyxis Ocean

One of the most symbolic moments in this wind revival came with the voyage of the Pyxis Ocean, an 80,000-tonne bulk carrier retrofitted with WindWings. Chartered by Cargill, the ship’s journey from Shanghai to Singapore wasn’t just another cargo run—it was a bold experiment in propulsion.
As the first vessel of its kind to sail with rigid wingsails, the Pyxis Ocean’s voyage serves as proof that the future of maritime transport can blend the clean simplicity of the past with the sophistication of modern engineering.

Wind isn’t sailing alone. Solar technology is also becoming a valuable player in the transition to greener seas. Ships with expansive decks can host photovoltaic panels to generate electricity for auxiliary systems or even charge hybrid battery banks. In Norway, the ferries are already operating on solar-charged electric power – the renewable energy that can redefine short-haul marine travel. The objective is to maximize clean energy while minimizing dependence on fossil fuels. These hybrid models also aim towards reducing the inconsistencies of wind and sunlight.
Navigating the Storms: Challenges Ahead
Challenges are an integral part of anything new and innovative. Hence, embracing wind and solar is not without issues. Winds are not reliable, especially in equatorial regions where there might be no breeze for days. Moreover, adding new propulsion systems to older ships can be costly and complex. Here, while alternative fuels like ammonia and methanol offer promise, they still lack the energy density for long-haul ocean crossings. However, WASP technologies helped to reduce fuel consumption by up to 40% in favorable conditions.
Setting the Sails for a Greener Tomorrow
What was once the domain of ancient mariners is now a frontier of climate innovation. Driven by economic incentives, regulatory pressure, and a commitment to sustainability, the shipping industry is beginning to embrace the wind once more – this time with high-tech tools and global ambition. It’s about transferring centuries of maritime knowledge into the future. The challenge is big, but the direction is clear.
Whether it’s Union Maritime’s ambitious WindWings initiative or the trailblazing voyage of the Pyxis Ocean, the shipping industry is catching the wind of change. With every sail hoisted and rotor spun, we move closer to a future where the oceans are crossed not only by goods but by hope—and powered by the very breeze that once guided the world’s first explorers.
