Since ancient times, the Chinese sages have maintained that the world is governed by five elements: wood, fire, earth, metal, and water. Although this concept may seem far removed from the modern world we live in, influential people such as Tony Robbins have innately embodied it, becoming global leaders by utilizing these elements to persuade and reach the masses.
However, this is not only about knowing how Robbins uses these elements to persuade, mobilize, and transform lives; it is also about the way in which you can use them in your daily life in the most strategic way possible, and of course, knowing how to recognize them, all in favor of strengthening your personal growth.
Persuasion is formed mainly by 3 pillars, which are:
These are naturally linked with the 5 millennial elements used by Robbins, which are: Metal (logos) which brings clarity, fire (pathos) awakening emotion, earth (ethos) which generates trust joining with two additional very important elements, wood which is in charge of pulsing vision and water which connects you with the depth of being. Undoubtedly, knowing and implementing this vision will help you achieve a greater impact when communicating your ideals.
The world we live in is collapsed with information, on more than one occasion what moves us all as human beings is not the logical order behind the message that is being given, but the energy behind it, the hidden wisdom behind persuasion, these five elements provide an outline that will lead you to understand how to drive wills, generate impact and of course maintain that change over time.
For example, Tony Robbins, without needing to say it explicitly, uses these elements, basing his style, stage presence and programs to transform on this ancestral logic. Being able to distinguish these principles can be vital to strengthen your leadership, your personal signature and especially your legacy.
Wood, representing what drives your growth
This element represents the desire to expand, the way of seeing things, and especially purpose. In fact, Tony always talks about going one step further, discovering new limits, and finding his personal mission. The philosophy is highly marked by this energy that influences the individual to evolve, as Robbins mentions, “if you are not growing, you are dying.” It will always be necessary to focus on growth in order not to stagnate.
Fire, as an energy capable of inspiring
This element is passion, emotion, and especially inspiration. Just seeing him on stage with a strong voice, gestures in his expressions with a lot of amplitude, and stories that captivate to tears, more than transmitting data, generates very intense emotions that form the desire to change.
Earth, which corresponds to the emotional base
This is nothing more than what nurtures, containment, and community as a base. In Tony’s events, people feel included and accepted by a supportive community. It is focused on the importance of relationships, stability, and gratitude reflect the importance of this element.
Metal is the strength in the structure of success
It is the sign of all things disciplined, systems, and order. In his case, all his programs were created with a clear, understandable, and repeatable methodology in mind; if we think about it for a moment, Tony’s success is the result of applying structure and measurable habits, and it was definitely not about luck.
Water that flows and connects deeply
This is a reflection of that silent intuition and our inner depth, although he may seem the most extroverted man, Robbins also encourages and guides his participants to have introspective moments, trying to heal the past and especially to connect with the essential self.
Like Robbins, you can use these elements and shape them as you see fit. Remember that this tool can be like a compass on your path; wood will help you set clear, long-term goals, but first, ask yourself, what do I want to start shaping? How would I like to use these methods to grow?
Use the fire element to connect with people’s emotions, increase your charisma by speaking from the heart, and take advantage of the goodness of the earth element to cultivate solid relationships, and increase your support for other people by building trust in your environment every day.
With the metal element, your connection will be time management, creating habits by organizing what is pending to do each day, and then evaluating with simple metrics. Likewise, with the water element, practice making moments of silence to listen to your intuition, to know the need that exists in your soul, and do not look only at your agenda.
A professional leader who drives, motivates, and creates impact in what he does is an effective and influential communicator who, in addition to having talent, is supported by his inner well-being. To maintain that balance, start implementing these 5 elements, and you will see the change almost immediately.
The five elements in motion are also practiced by the famous Nike brand, known for its sale of footwear, accessories, equipment, and sportswear. Their work methodology has allowed them to mobilize the internal energies of their employees and all the people involved in the process. We tell you how they apply the five elements:
Wood: The Nike brand is all about challenge, overcoming, and growth. They have the impulse of wood and take it to action: They go to the front row, break limits, and never stop moving forward.
Fire: Their campaign shows emotion with videos that make people vibrate. Their stories illuminate the soul. All their communication is transmitted with passion, just as the representation of fire is.
Earth: Nike encourages a sense of belonging, connection, and commitment through phrases, sporting events, or stories that connect, characteristics of the earth element.
Metal: They take care of perfection by maintaining a quality design and good aesthetics. As well as self-demanding. Nike constantly reinforces this with its messages of reaching the highest level, improving, and being able to follow as is its motto “Just Do It”.
Water: The Nike brand is not afraid to explore beyond where many dare not, touching on complicated topics such as inclusion and mental health. As is the element of water: fluidity and wisdom.
The balance of the five elements within the Nike brand allows it to sell products and, at the same time, connect emotionally with the elements of people, making everyone create a sense of belonging with the brand.
By knowing the five elements, communication can be transformative, and by changing the way we lead teams, the results will be modified. For example, if a company faces friction and fluidity (a wooden person gets frustrated with the slowness of processes and a Metal person needs order and planning to feel secure), the leader will have to adapt to the emotional needs of each one, then in this environment, productivity, harmony, and solid commitment will originate.
This perspective has been practiced in large organizations such as Zappos, where they have a humanistic and personalized approach, recognizing each person with his or her own energy. Let’s remember that a good leader is one who stimulates internal emotions, rather than imposing external goals.
Imagine leading a project where people feel seen, valued, and recognized for their energy. Applying the ancient secrets of persuasion, in addition to the purpose of selling, is also to live in harmony with others and lead with adaptability, purpose, and emotional intelligence.
Likewise, working in an organization where you practice the five elements that Tony Robbins has channeled is interesting, plus you will be able to see how human nature aligns with productivity. These testimonials prove it:
“Zappos encourages employees to show up as they are and bring their passions to work.” Commented one of its employees in an article posted on RyanJenkins.”
“They have an amazing culture, and I’m comforted to see so much good in the world. This really shows what ‘community’ means, and exemplifies the perfect work environment that we should all aspire to.” Expressed by one of the Zappos Insights program participants.
In your style, surely one element predominates; observe which one you identify with the most. Is your communication from fire? How is your listening from water? Balance is in constant movement. You don’t have to shout to persuade others, nor control to guide. Learn to align your energy with intention. Wisely using these ancient secrets.
So it’s time to take action and keep in mind what Tony Robbins shows us in the way he projects himself to others, with inner mastery and an authentic connection beyond words. You just have to learn to identify and balance the five elements of your personality. You will undoubtedly connect more, live totally different experiences, impacting others, inspiring, persuading, and making you unforgettable. At AIU, we are dedicated to accompanying you to be part of this great change, developing a unique and different leadership, so we have flexible and customized programs that will provide you with all the tools you need to chart your path of academic and personal success.
