Artificial Intelligence in Modern Distance Education

The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Modern Distance Education

As technology advances and education continues to evolve, the way in which education is delivered to students is changing. In the past, education was typically offered in a classroom setting, or through an online course with pre-recorded or static materials. However, technology has changed the way education is delivered and has drastically improved the ability of universities to provide distance education using artificial intelligence (AI). In fact, AI is becoming the primary tool for distance education and is facilitating the development of creative new educational experiences for people around the world.

Modern Distance education

Modern Distance education is changing rapidly from what it was when it began in the early twentieth century (when students would receive their course materials through the mails) to the very early part of the twenty-first century, when students were provided with comparative to today, limited asynchronous online courses. With advances in technology and the capabilities offered by artificial intelligence in education, the education landscape for distance learning is able to be delivered much more quickly and efficiently to a global audience. AI-driven distance education moves away from providing students with a uniform learning experience to providing students with personalized and adaptable learning experiences, based on data collected from previous distance learning experiences.

As one would expect, the demand for educational institutions that incorporate AI into the delivery of education has increased. According to some estimates, the global market for AI in education was approximately $7.5 million back in 2025 but is expected to be growing at an average annual growth rate (CAGR) of over 40%, through the end of this decade, indicating that institutions are rapidly incorporating AI into the educational process and supporting the development of distance education. The growing acceptance of AI as a means of delivering education is not a future vision; it is taking place now, delivering tremendous value to students, institutions, and educators.

How did Distance Education Evolve?

It was not until the Internet that distance education evolved into what we know today. In the 19th Century, students who were learning at a distance received their lessons through the post when studying with their instructors. Other newer forms of distance education were introduced to the masses including educational radio, educational television, and then eventually computer-based training (CBT). As the Internet began to grow in use and application in the late 1990s and early 2000s, companies began using Learning Management Systems (LMS), Asynchronous Learning Networks (ALN), and the first versions of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC). However, while they provided greater access than ever previously, they were still unable to deliver the same level of personalized instruction or adjust to student needs in a timely manner like today’s systems.

The standardization of content for artificial intelligence in education to meet the same needs of every student, the slowing down of instructor feedback for each student, the lack of interaction and engagement between students and instructors, and the absence of a method for students to monitor their progress in real-time were some of the challenges of traditional distance education. Today, with Artificial Intelligence (AI), the distance learning model has evolved into a much more responsive, adaptive, and intelligent approach to learning, providing students with the ability to utilize the latest real-time analytics and continuity of learning to create their own personalized path to success.

AI Technologies in Education: A Summary

AI in distance education consists of systems and methods that replicate the operations of human cognition, including but not limited to the ways in which humans learn, think and solve problems. AI consists of the following:

  • Machine Learning (ML) – Algorithms for artificial intelligence in education used to identify patterns in learner behaviour then adjust instructional material based on those patterns.
  • Natural Language Processing (NLP) – The ability of an animal or robot to communicate in natural language and provide assistance with understanding or responding to questions in natural language.
  • Predictive Analytics – The ability of humans to collect and evaluate performance data in order to create predictive patterns of how the individual(s) will perform in the future, based on prior performance indicators.
  • Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITSs) – The use of technology to provide individualised support for learners through guidance or scaffolding.

AI’s capability is based upon its ability to analyse huge volumes of educational data and provide information regarding how students learn, where they experience difficulties, and what type of instructional materials are needed to support their learning, that would be difficult for AI in online learning instructors working independently or even large groups of instructors working together to accomplish at such a high level.

The significant amount of survey data related to this development shows that this trend has grown substantially.  By 2024 and 2025, more than 80% of the US postsecondary education institutions that participated indicated they had incorporated or planned to incorporate some form of AI into their teaching and/or administrative methodologies, with an increasing trend of schools using AI to provide assistance with adaptive learning and learner engagement tools.

Advantages of Artificial Intelligence In Online Learning

1. Individualized & Adaptive Learning

The most important advantage of AI is that it allows for customization to meet learner’s requirements. Basic distance education approaches are offered to the “average” student; however, each student has different past knowledge, speed of learning, preferred learning style, etc. The applications of AI for distance education overcome this problem by:

a) Adapting the level of difficulty for lessons to meet on-going performance levels;

b) Providing resource recommendations based upon learners’ strengths and weaknesses;

c) Offering adaptive drills, simulations, and practice tests.

Studies have shown that smaller, individualized learning pathways lead to greater student satisfaction and increased knowledge retention than a traditional/ uniform instructional approach.

2. AI has the ability to Assess and provide Instant or Real-time Feedback.

With AI providing students with ongoing Instant or Real-time Feedback, students no longer have to wait for weeks for graded assignments and are now provided with instant feedback on essay structure, clarity  and  correctness of steps taken to solve mathematical problems as well as the level of understanding and mastery of concepts through the use of adaptive quizzes.

Moreover, providing Real-time Assessments and feedback to the student provides them an accelerated learning experience and helps to develop metacognition and help students to understand how they learn and how to adjust their learning strategies as needed more quickly.

3. Predictive Analytical Technologies Enable Universities to Better Assist Students in Their Own Success

With the correct role of artificial intelligence in education, colleges can use predictive analytical technologies to determine the likelihood of student success by tracking various behaviours, quiz results, and time spent on instructional materials along with various engagement metrics. They can then use Predictive Analytical Technologies as follows:

  1. Early Identification Systems help identify students at risk for dropping out
  2. Provide customised interventions based on student needs through additional support services, such as tutor and workshop/course experience
  3. Establish AI assisted learning with proactive plans for supporting students, to reduce the likelihood of withdrawal due to lack of support.

Colleges and universities that utilize artificial intelligence-based early warning systems experience a reduction in their attrition rates and an increase in their academic performance.

4. Efficiency and Administrative Assistance

When using AI, educators can reduce their administrative tasks using the following:

  • AI does the grading of objective tests automatically.
  • AI assists faculty in scheduling and planning courses intelligently.
  • Because of the convenience of AI chatbots that respond to many students’ questions right away.
  • AI streamlines the admissions process or workflow for student access and support.

Because of increased efficiency, AI frees educators to spend more of their time mentoring; developing curriculum and engaging in higher-order activities that require human interaction that AI cannot replace.

5. Accessibility and Inclusion

AI creates more opportunities to include individuals who have lacked participation in distance education, including learners who are disabled, learners who speak different languages, and those who reside in different regions or countries utilizing multiple devices. AI allows these artificial intelligence in education to have equitable access to learning materials.

Artificial Intelligence (AI)- Centric Technologies Used to Promote Distance Education

The term Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to many different technologies, and when combined, these technologies have the potential to impact positively on the provision of distance education through an increase in the level of educational outcome achieved. Some of the most prominent uses of AI in relation to education include the following:

  • Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS) is a technology that can replicate 1:1 tutoring.
  • AI Bots are platforms that provide students with 24 hour support throughout their studies.
  • Generative AI Assistants aid in research and assist in other ideas.
  • Adaptive Learning Platforms provide opportunities to learn and retake assessments based on mastery
  • Recommendation Engines can help identify learning paths

In summary, the AI powered education intelligent learning systems mentioned above form an educational ecosystem that allows students to interact with educational content in ways that are both personalized (meaning that one’s individual learning needs are recognized) and interactive (meaning that students have multiple pathways through their learning experiences).

AI-Enhanced Learning: The Opportunities and Challenges of AI

Some of the positive opportunities offered by the use of AI in education will be explained below, as well as many traditional educational barriers that will likely need to be overcome before these benefits can be effectively utilized within educational institutions.

  • Data Privacy and Data Security

All artificial intelligence tools require the collection of large amounts of data from students including their academic performance data, their action patterns, and their participation in the classroom. Protecting this data requires educational institutions to implement proper governance of the data, encryption and clear procedures for consent.

  • Algorithm Bias

AI-centric digital education technology that are trained to recommend an academic path based on previous performance that was based on bias or unrepresentative data could inadvertently promote unequal opportunity. Educational institutions should ensure that their systems are designed with a fair process, have a regular audit schedule, and collect from a diverse population.

  • Digital Divide and Access

AI-enhanced learning needs dependable/available Internet connection and modern technology. Without fair access to infrastructure, educational artificial intelligence driven students in deprived neighbourhoods won’t have the advantage of having an equal chance at a quality education; thus, this renders digital equality a major issue.

  • Ethical Use / Integrity

Generative AI Tools have the ability to help create a better learning experience; however, they can also be abused and used for cheating (i.e. plagiarism) or to find ways around legitimate assessments. The responsibilities associated with AI use will be left to the academic institutions to develop a policy framework outlining an ethical framework for AI use that will promote responsible behaviour.
