AIU’s master’s degree in criminology & civil disputes is designed around a unique combination of core content and various specializations that will provide a complete picture of crime, conflict and justice systems. The key study areas of online masters in criminology and civil will include Criminological Theories, Criminal Justice Systems, Civil Law and Procedure, Dispute Resolution Processes and Techniques, Forensic Psychology, Victimology, and Restorative Justice. AIU’s Master’s in Criminology and Civil Disputes program starts with five key orientation courses designed to provide students with reference points to find their way along the academic journey intentionally. The registration process should be completed before orientation so that the outlines from the published program documents are available to each orientation course to support the students’ journey.
The orientations include Philosophy of Education, Academic Evaluation, Fundamentals of Self-Directed Learning, Communication and Investigation, and Development of Graduate Study Tools. Each orientation will be aligned to support the andragogic direction taken by AIU as well as develop the students’ ability to take responsibility for their educational journey, develop research, analysis, and reflexivity skills, and provide an initial learning framework to facilitate meaningful advanced study into criminology, civil law, and dispute resolution.
As part of the Masters in Criminology and Civil Disputes at AIU, students undertake substantive research projects that connect theory with practice. These research projects of masters in criminology and conflict resolution give students the opportunity to examine important issues including: (1) How restorative justice programs affect offenders, victims and communities; (2) patterns and prevention of cyber crime; (3) sociological factors related to civil unrest; (4) analysis of wrongful convictions; and, (5) evaluation of mediation as a process used to resolve legal disputes.
While these are just a few examples, AIU allows Masters in Criminology and Civil Law students to design their own research path, and students might also research issues such as, (1) gender based violence; (2) prison reform; (3) transnational crime; and (4) community mediation and non adjudicative dispute resolution practices. AIU encourages innovation and critical inquiry, as well as real contributions to justice and society, through its exercise and andragogical educational model that allows students to locate and focus their research.
