I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to share my personal experience with
online learning at Atlantic International University as an adult in South Africa and to
explain my motivation for seeking further education from an international perspective.
After completing three qualifications from different universities in South Africa, I felt it
was necessary to explore the education system from a perspective outside of my own
country. The idea of attending an international university, where I could engage with
diverse cultures, religions, and students from around the world, presented a rare
opportunity for me to expand my understanding of the global landscape. It became
clear to me that knowing only about my own country was no longer sufficient, as the
interconnectedness of the world means that the actions of other countries significantly
impact our well-being.
My previous projects involved assisting welfare organizations, which then led to
working with various student organizations. Eventually, I had the opportunity to work
with refugees and gained a deeper understanding of the dynamics between my
country and its neighbours. These experiences highlighted the profound impact that
each country has on the other, underscoring the impossibility of working in isolation.
After attending an international university with students sharing various projects
through online presentations, I gave me a chance to discover how other countries
operate. I needed to understand our differences and similarities, as well as gain an indepth appreciation of the opportunities and challenges posed by global interactions.
This broader perspective is essential for addressing complex issues that transcend
national boundaries.
The digital divide in South Africa is a well-documented challenge, and I worried about
the reliability of my internet connection and access to necessary technology. However,
I found that many online learning platforms are designed with these challenges in
mind, providing resources that are accessible even with limited bandwidth.
One of the most significant benefits of online learning has been the ability to connect
with a diverse community of learners from across the country and around the world.
This exposure to different perspectives has enriched my educational experience,
broadening my understanding of various subjects. Moreover, the online format has
fostered a sense of independence and self-discipline, essential skills in today’s fastpaced world.
interactions, while virtual, provided a sense of community and support.
Furthermore, the quality of online education varies significantly across different
platforms. It was important for me to research and select accredited programs to
ensure that my efforts would be recognized and valued in the professional world. The
recognition of online qualifications by employers is steadily improving, but it remains
a consideration for anyone embarking on this path.
In conclusion, my experience with online learning as an adult in South Africa has been
transformative. It has opened up new avenues for personal and professional growth
that would have been inaccessible through traditional education models. The journey
has taught me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of lifelong learning. As
technology continues to advance, I am confident that online learning will play an
increasingly vital role in shaping the future of education in South Africa and beyond.
Thank you for taking the time to read about my experience. I hope it provides insight
into the benefits and challenges of online learning from an adult learner’s perspective.
Sincerely,
Joyce Nxumalo (Sibeko)
