I have now completed all eight required courses toward my doctorate of science and I am extremely pleased that I chose Atlantic International University. I have attended other institutions includingone for a previous doctorate in education and the experience at AIU was superior and more rewarding. I say that for several reasons: The philosophy underlying learning empowers the student by allowing him or her to focus directly on areas of interest and to do so in a creative way. The school recognizes that education and learning can and do take many different forms and that the classroom of life itself is as much a laboratory of knowledge and understanding as a classroom or textbook. I always say that true learning occurs when the head meets the heart and what is learned is relevant and applicable to one’s needs and circumstances. AIU allows the student to achieve this goal in spades. It encourages the student to ‘think outside the box’ and to recognize that information is not knowledge and that knowledge is not understanding. By looking at things from various perspectives it allows the student (better called the learner) to analyze more deeply and to connect the dots among disciplines. But behind the innovative curriculum is the university itself and I have only the highest praise for the staff and administration. I refer to Edward Lambert who was an excellent guide and wonderful adviser throughout the process. I could not have been more fortunate. Edward was always very supportive and responsive to any request or question I would have. He provided excellent advice which was helpful and reassuring. He is a huge asset to the university and made my journey of academic and personal growth the best academic experience of my life.I had contact on occasion with Kinmberly Diaz, tutor, and she was always warm and encouraging and responsive as well.AIU is user friendly which was appreciated by myself who does not consider himself technically proficient, so the idea of undertaking a post graduate degree dependent on technology was an intimidating prospect. But it turned out to be, with instructions provided, easier than I had imagined. I also had the assistance of a wonderful administrative assistant, Leona Chase, who helpednavigate the process and was indispensable.
The resources such as the library were there if and when needed and the learning opportunities such as Student Services offerings on topics such as developing a passion for learning or the course of the day were there to enhance learning and personal development as well as Campus Mundi. I liked the fact that learning is considered a holistic process, a human experience.
AIU reaches out to student learners, keeps them up to date and a chance to be involved and lays out expectations clearly. This institution in opinion is on the leading edge of where education needs to go in the 21st century.
