Research Projects

Dissertation Defense

The final stage of the Postdoctoral program in Sustainable Materials Science at AIU is the dissertation defense: the final academic celebration that demonstrates the scholar’s original contributions in the field. AIU holds dissertation defenses via Zoom so that scholars can defend their to the university’s diverse academic audience from around the world. The dissertation defense is not to be confused with the thesis defense, which has more guidelines.

Instead, it allows scholars to make a presentation of their results, show depth in their methods chapter for questioning and discussion with astute examiners. The dissertation defense is a reflection of the commitment to academic excellence, intellectual independence, and application of knowledge for solutions to sustainability-actionable solutions through a lens of sustainability. The dissertation defense not only validates the expert status of the scholar in their field, it also positions the scholar to be a thought leader in sustainability materials with substantial source knowledge.
