The Sustainable Materials Science Postdoctoral program at AIU has broad, flexible, and comprehensive programming with a focus on exploring advanced topics in sustainable innovation. The core courses incorporate useful material in four critical areas: the design of environmentally friendly materials, new technologies on sustainability, the principle and concept of life cycle thinking, and integrating resources based on renewable inputs in a material system. As part of the andragogical model outlined at AIU, this Postdoctoral program encourages students to think and reflect critically as independent researchers and to apply contained theoretical learning to real-world problems. Each course is designed to allow students to follow their own academic interests while creating opportunities through innovative science to serve globally relevant needs.
Scholars in the Postdoctoral program in Sustainable Materials Science at AIU begin their academic experience with orientation courses that provide a foundation for independent research and an academic path forward. The Postdoc in Green Materials Science orientation courses introduce scholars to the AIU andragogic model of learning, the distance education experience, being self-directed in their academic work, and goal-setting. The orientation courses lay the groundwork for more in-depth exploration of important ideas in research methodology, scientific writing, academic integrity, and how to find information and research on the AIU Virtual Campus and other digital forms. The Postdoctoral in Sustainable Materials Science orientation helps scholars prepare for postdoctoral jobs and take advantage of the individualized paths to learning and engagement with sustainability-related problems on a global scale.
At AIU, our emphasis in the Postdoctoral program in Sustainable Materials Science is on original research that achieves a positive impact on sustainability globally, and more broadly to be engaged with the advancement of science. Scholars will be invited to develop ambitious and new research projects in support of their ideal professional goals while reacting to the key environmental challenges of our time. Research areas may include bio-based biodegradable materials, energy efficient composites, nanotechnology for clean energy, waste-to-resource technologies, and sustainably sourced alternative materials to support common manufacturing materials.
In general, AIU employs a unique andragogic model of flexible learning for postdoctoral research in sustainable materials, thus allowing the postdoctoral position in materials science scholars to essentially design their own project while supported by their mentors and colleagues. Each project is self-directed and the menu of options to contribute to an impactful research process is expansive and can affect change in institutions, industries, and communities worldwide.
Publication – At AIU, student publishing is a critical part of the Postdoctoral program in Sustainable Materials Science, which showcases the university’s commitment to academic freedom and global dissemination of knowledge. Scholars are encouraged and supported to publish in peer-reviewed journals, present at international conferences, and contribute writing activities that are interdisciplinary with other forums focused on sustainability and material innovation because of the focus on real-world solutions.
Students are actively guided by AIU’s academic support process on how to prepare manuscripts, citation standards, and how to disseminate research. Publishing experiences will add to the scholar’s academic profile or portfolio and ensure that their contribution to the field of sustainable materials is relevant and meaningful within the context of a fast-evolving field and environmental solutions.
The final stage of the Postdoctoral program in Sustainable Materials Science at AIU is the dissertation defense: the final academic celebration that demonstrates the scholar’s original contributions in the field. AIU holds dissertation defenses via Zoom so that scholars can defend their to the university’s diverse academic audience from around the world. The dissertation defense is not to be confused with the thesis defense, which has more guidelines.
Instead, it allows scholars to make a presentation of their results, show depth in their methods chapter for questioning and discussion with astute examiners. The dissertation defense is a reflection of the commitment to academic excellence, intellectual independence, and application of knowledge for solutions to sustainability-actionable solutions through a lens of sustainability. The dissertation defense not only validates the expert status of the scholar in their field, it also positions the scholar to be a thought leader in sustainability materials with substantial source knowledge.
In the Postdoctoral program in Sustainable Materials Science at AIU, the student experience is personal, deeply engaged and global. Following the principles of andragogy, learners are engaged with the process by allowing learners to develop their own journey through academia, choosing their research problems and their learning opportunities to fit their professional career and impact on society. AIU has a dynamic virtual campus: students have access to many digital resources, they can connect with other scholars from around the globe and they are able to get mentoring from experienced scholars in the field individually. Postdoctoral research in nanomaterials is inherently flexible; this self-directed learning is conducive to deep reflection, creativity and purpose. The research experience empowers scholars to see that made contributions to sustainability while aligning their academic research with their possible impact on society and the delicate balance between their academic, professional and personal lives.
At AIU, pursuing scientific and professional excellence is not done in isolation. The Postdoctoral program in Sustainable Materials Science within a vibrant international community of scholars, researchers and change agents with a shared commitment to a more sustainable future. On virtual campus, students interact synchronously and asynchronously with scholars on innovative and interdisciplinary campus projects from more than 180 countries, learning through peer-based, multicultural, and social responsibilities which create and support a rich culture of intellectual diversity, inclusivity, innovation, and potentiality of the group.
In addition to academic collaboration, AIU encourages postdoctoral scholars to extend their engagement in postdoctoral research in renewable materials beyond academia in socially-engaged sustainability initiatives, and community-inspired research, which extends scientific inquiry to societal needs. Whether students are facilitating a green innovation design workshop, implementing environmental education programming, mentoring novice scientists, and in general engaging with prominent leaders from plans for sustainable orders, students are empowered to envision and realize the expanded reach of their influence beyond laboratory boundaries and into the world. This notion of a global community, and social awareness is what distinguishes AIU—it prepares and nurtures students to become groups of researcher in biodegradable materials and sustainable polymer chemistry as both scholars and leaders of sustainable development.
