Job Description

A Bachelor’s degree in Political Science provides students with necessary, transferable skills for managing the complexities of the global environment of the present. Graduates will leave with strong analytical skills that allow them to critically assess political phenomena, public policies, and governance arrangements. They will learn strong communication skills for articulating and debating political theories and ideas both orally and in writing. Graduates will leave the program with a broad understanding of political systems, international relations, and legal systems.

These skills are transferable to many careers. For example, the analytical skills of a Political Science graduate would be useful for a Government or think tank policy analyst to analyze the implications of new legislation or public policy. The ability to communicate effectively is crucial for political consultants, lobbyists and campaign managers, as they seek to offer complications that will rouse an audience’s interest in presenting, and persuading them to change their mind about or influence public conceptions of reality and decisions of public policy. Similarly, a strong understanding of political and legal systems can benefit people working in public administration or international organizations or non-governmental organizations (NGOs) who want to use their understanding of political and governance systems to help to improve their governance systems or raise awareness of or advocate for human rights and humanitarian issues or contribute to writings on international relations.

Career Opportunities for People with a Bachelors in Political Science

Pursuing a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science in Political Science from an accredited institution will open many career opportunities in a wide range of industries. The degree will provide students with essential skills including critical thinking, analytical skills, and comprehensive understandings of political systems, international relations, and policy making processes. Some broad areas of interests and possible careers are:
  1. Government & Public Service:  Many graduates will find the opportunity for overall rewarding careers in working with the government at the federal, state, or local levels. Depending on their positions, they can be working in, in many different areas, an analyst, diplomats and peace studies, legislative assistant, public affairs specialist and many other positions, alli ing with policies and policy development, development and research, and implementation. One of the things about working in public service is that, instead of working in the realities of them, and maybe effectively changing or contributing to the governance and administration of public affairs, everything is always theoretical.
  2. Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and International Organizations: Having the opportunity to work with an NGO or international organization like the United Nations or European Union can be enormously fulfilling. Working with international organizations or non-governmental organizations offers an opportunity to contribute to global challenges while using your education in international relations, political science, development studies or another related field. Jobs in this space can offer opportunities including (but are not limited to) human rights, environmental policy, international development or humanitarian work. Political Campaigning and Consulting: If you are a political science graduate with analytical and communicative skills, you might thrive in campaign settings, or consulting. These roles include political analysis, strategic planning and media or public relations to assist electoral campaigns, political parties, or individual politicians.
  3. Law: Although you would need a law degree to become a practising lawyer, a political science degree addresses many of the foundations for law as a career. Further, you might become a paralegal or legal assistant which could lead to a legal career as well, particularly in areas of constitutional law or human rights, international law, and public policy.
  1. Education and Research: Political scientists develop a broad foundation in political theory, and research methods that are useful for academic research or education. Research firms or institutions such as think tanks, might employ you as a research associate, or you could seek teaching opportunities at either a secondary or post-secondary level.
  2. Media and Journalism: With your understanding of political contexts and ability to analyze complex political information as well as present it in a clear and conscientious manner, you would be a valued asset in journalism. This could include reporting and analysis in the political realm, or commenting on political issues or ideas.
  3. Private Sector: Many corporations seek candidates with significant experience or knowledge of political risk analysis, or dealing with government relations or corporate social responsibility issues. As a graduate of political studies you would be able to assist businesses in navigating the political and regulatory environment such as in the area of doing business abroad, or contributing to multiple stakeholder consultation process to ensure business is ethical and sustainable etc.

A Bachelor’s degree in Political Science provides an excellent foundation for a number of potential employment opportunities in various fields, such as the public sector (e.g., politics, public administration) or the private sector (e.g., lobbying, corporate government relations and public affairs), as well as a foundation for advanced degrees (Master’s or Doctorate) in specialization Graduate degrees will often consist of qualifications such as having gone through certain programs in political analysis, public policy, international diplomacy, or political theory. Earning an advanced degree often allows for more strategic employment opportunities and positions with increased operational and functional responsibilities. Pursuing more strategic opportunities often derives from obtaining a graduate degree in Political Science, as they can open further doors not only in government, but also in other pursuits, such as non-governmental organizations (NGOs), international organizations (projects), or academia. Graduate degrees can also mean many more employment opportunities outside the public sector, as many NGOs hire individuals with expertise derived from advanced degrees or doctoral designation. As mentioned, often these positions will also be compensated at a higher rate of pay compared to what would be offered in the public sector.

Gaining as much practical experience as possible through internships, volunteer opportunities, or some form of part-time work in a relevant field, is strongly suggested as this can enhance employment opportunities for graduates of political science. Internships, volunteer, and part-time work can provide a glimpse of how political systems work within local, regional, or national levels, and where and how policy ideas and implementation arise, or how international relations operate. If applicants are also able to obtain certifications or some other type of additional training (related to Political Science) in specialized areas of political science work, not only may this improve your career enhancement opportunities but it may also help specialize your knowledge and work within a chosen (preferred) area of study or field.

FAQs

What is the best Political Science degree?

The “best” Political Science degree is influenced by personal and career ambitions and goals. A Bachelor’s in Political Science is all-encompassing as it covers the basics of Political Science (government, international relations, political theory and public policy). It is a good degree if you are just entering your field and want a general degree that could allow you to pivot a million different ways (i.e., government, law, advocate, and business). You should think about your own career intentions.  It depends though on what direction students are interested in pursuing a degree in.  Each has benefits which are driven by your motivation behind a degree.

What type of job can I get a Bachelor's in Political Science?

Graduates with Bachelor degrees in Political Science have many career choices using their degree in either public or private sectors.  While many graduates will transition into work through a government agency, there are also consulting organizations in the private sector, there could be public relations/communications where political processes and policy could be useful knowledge.  Non-profits and social organizations also have applicability in their advocacy, research, community outreach and many other positions.  A Bachelor of Political Science could also provide pathways for advanced education, a Master’s or Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree providing possibilities for teaching, or specific work in the broader fields of politics and government.

What is the difference between a BA and a BS degree in Political Science?

The difference between a Bachelor of Arts (BA) and a Bachelor of Science (BS), can be primarily centered around differences in the curriculum.A Bachelor of Arts in Political Science is usually considered “more elite” is more of an arts degree (with a liberal arts liberal education with a very solid public affairs foundation in social sciences) and for the social sciences, the social sciences have both social sciences programs and humanities offer student courses to take a language. A Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in political science is what we would typically consider a more general education and is typically designed for students who are wanting to study political science with a course/work/experiences related to many other academic disciplines.

A Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in political science would be very analogous to the BS degree in social sciences with a more quantitative/technical in terms of focus and nature. A BS degree usually has a greater number of courses in math and statistics and volume of courses in data analysis. A BS would be much more aligned to students wanting a career that includes research or policy analysis or even those aspects of the field of Political Science that supported decisions based on data-driven planning.

In summary, the area of study you would major in (BA or BS) would depend on your individual academic interests and career aspirations. An “Arts” would be more general; whereas a “Science” would be more limited to quantitative analysis.

How to Make a Decision Between a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science in Political Science?

The best frame of reference for making a decision about whether you would want to study a Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Science (BS) in Political Science, is probably your academic interests and career aspirations. A Bachelor of Arts (BA) would deliver a broader education; grounded in the liberal arts and humanities; and would be more appropriate for students wanting to pursue a career in public relations, communication, or advocacy related areas. Whereas, a BS would be more aligned with quantitative analysis, data-driven knowledge/experience, and research and policy analysis, and may be more congruent with a career as a survey researcher, policy advisor, or data analyst. In short, consider your personal academic interests; which curriculum you would prefer and which would cause you the least discomfort; and where you foresee yourself pursuing a career.
