We are proud to spotlight the experiences of one of our dedicated students who has not only embraced the challenges of teaching abroad but has also immersed himself in the rich cultural tapestry of Yemen.
A Unique Teaching Experience
The Republic of Sudan’s government facilitated a remarkable opportunity by sending our student, Gatkouth Keuth, alongside other educators, to the Republic of Yemen to teach Mathematics in secondary schools for five years. This initiative, born from a protocol signed between the two governments, allowed him to explore workplace culture and the nuances of living in a foreign country.
Having previously worked at Lutfi Senior Secondary School in Jezeera, Sudan—established to support displaced South Sudanese children—he brought a wealth of experience to his new role. His journey back to Khartoum school break also allowed him to continue personal milestones, including his marriage.
Insights into Workplace Culture
Gatkouth Keuth shared valuable insights into the workplace culture in Yemen, where teachers and administrators hold authoritative positions. Decisions made by senior staff are typically adhered to without challenge, fostering a strong sense of discipline and moral values within the educational environment. Schools emphasize social responsibility, creating an atmosphere where students respect their elders and maintain community standards.
Collaboration among teachers is a hallmark of Yemeni schools, where sharing teaching strategies and supporting professional development are encouraged. The influence of religious practices is evident, with schools accommodating daily prayers and adjusting schedules during Ramadan. Gatkouth noted the separation of boys and girls in most classrooms, adhering to cultural norms while maintaining educational standards.
Life Abroad: Challenges and Community
Living abroad presented both challenges and enriching experiences. The student and his wife rented an affordable home, utilized public healthcare, and engaged in community activities with local friends. Daily routines involved teaching from 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., followed by shopping and social interactions, reflecting a lifestyle shaped by cultural expectations.
Despite being non-Muslim in a predominantly Islamic country, the couple felt respected by the Yemeni people, thanks to their commitment to cultural sensitivity. They adhered to guidelines from the Sudanese embassy regarding discussions of religion, fostering a harmonious coexistence.
A Broader Perspective
Reflecting on his journey, Gatkouth emphasized the rewarding yet challenging nature of working in a foreign environment. He noted that his remuneration exceeded that of local teachers, which further enabled him to adapt and thrive within diverse settings.
This experience has not only enriched his professional journey but has also equipped him with a global perspective, reinforcing the belief that cultural exchange and understanding are vital in today’s interconnected world.
