Assignment: Ethical Decision-Making in Professional Practice

Objective:
The purpose of this assignment is to analyze a real or hypothetical ethical dilemma in a professional context, applying ethical principles and decision-making models. This will help students develop critical thinking skills and understand how to navigate ethical challenges in professional environments.

Assignment Instructions:

  1. Choose a Professional Context:
Select a real or hypothetical situation from a professional field (e.g., healthcare, law, business, education) where an ethical dilemma arises. You can either use a case from your own experience, a published case study, or create a fictional scenario based on common ethical challenges in the chosen field.
  2. Identify the Ethical Dilemma:
Describe the ethical dilemma in detail. What is the conflict or decision that needs to be made? Identify the key stakeholders involved, the ethical principles in conflict (e.g., autonomy vs. beneficence), and the potential consequences of each decision.
  3. Apply Ethical Decision-Making Models:
Using at least two ethical decision-making models (e.g., utilitarianism, deontology, virtue ethics), analyze the situation. Apply each model to identify possible courses of action, their benefits, and risks. Consider how each model leads to a different outcome.
  4. Analyze Professional Codes of Conduct:
Refer to the professional codes of conduct that would be relevant to the situation. How do these codes guide the resolution of the ethical dilemma? How should the professional adhere to these standards, and how do they inform your decision-making process?
  5. Evaluate the Ethical Implications:
Discuss the ethical implications of the possible decisions. Which decision best aligns with ethical principles such as justice, non-maleficence, and respect for autonomy? Consider how cultural sensitivity and diversity may impact the decision-making process.
  6. Conclusion and Recommendation:
Based on your analysis, provide a recommendation for how the ethical dilemma should be resolved. Justify your choice, explaining why it is the most ethically sound decision based on the models, principles, and codes you’ve applied. Discuss any potential challenges in implementing the decision in a real-world context.

Assignment Deliverables:

  • A written report (1,500–2,000 words) organized according to the outline above.
  • References: Cite at least 3 academic sources (journal articles, books, professional codes) to support your analysis.
  • Format: Use APA formatting for citations and references. Include an introduction (overview of the ethical dilemma) and conclusion (recommendation and justification).

Evaluation Criteria:

  • Depth of Analysis: Clear and thorough application of ethical principles and decision-making models.
  • Clarity of Argument: Well-organized, logical argument that articulates the ethical dilemma and proposed resolution.
  • Use of Codes of Conduct: Appropriate and effective use of professional ethical codes to guide the analysis.
  • Critical Thinking: Demonstration of critical thinking in evaluating the ethical implications of different actions.
  • Quality of Writing: Well-written, clear, and concise report with proper citation and referencing.

Dr. Vasconcelos got his PhD in John Hopkins University. He has a very successful life in the Academia side. He has contributed greatly to his Fields, by conducting researches and publications; and by guiding students in the path to achieve further educations. He shares the mission of the University and he is determined to do his share, in order to attain, all of the Goals.

Jorge Vasconcelos is currently a research scientist at the Institute for Security Information of the Johns Hopkins University, working in the fields of Embedded Computing Security and Computing Fundamentals Education, particularly developing undergraduate educational projects for computer architecture and mentoring students implementing IS&A applications in microcontrollers.

He is also an Academic Advisor in Atlantic International University, AIU, and a member of the Academic Council.

He received his B.Sc. in Computer Engineering (with honors) from the Arturo Rosenblueth Foundation, in Mexico City in 1996, and his M.S.E. and Ph.D. in Computer Science from the Johns Hopkins University (May 2000 and 2008, respectively.)

His doctoral research focused in four aspects of Computer Science Education: (i) application of the constructivist paradigm to programming instruction, (ii) creation of instruments for early detection of cognitive abilities required in algorithmic problem solving, (iii) study of individual differences to promote differentiated instruction within the computer science classroom, and (iv) design of curricular models focused in problem solving and algorithmic thinking. In the future, he intends to incorporate computer architecture, hardware control, cryptography, and information security, into his research on computer education.

Jorge has taught introductory computer science for almost two decades, and published five high school textbooks for the Mexican market. Atlantic International University exists as an institution of experiential learning and non-traditional education at a distance. There are no classrooms and attendance is not required. What makes us unique is the combination of a student “self-instruction” approach (with guidance), the collaborative development of a curriculum that is unique to each student, and the flexibility of time and place of study.

Let us know your goals and aspirations so we can chart a path at AIU to achieve them!
