At AIU, core courses and topics in the Bachelor of Environmental Science program include introductory courses to Environmental Chemistry, Ecology and Biodiversity, Conservation Biology, Environmental Policy and Regulation, Sustainable Development, Climate Change Science (focus on adaptation), Environmental Impact Assessment, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for Environmental Applications through to Field Methods in Environmental Science. These core choices allow students to feel prepared and confident to take the next step whether the next step is a career in conservation or environmental management, conservation policy analysis, environmental management, etc.

With experiential learning at its core, students will apply their theoretical knowledge through use of Field Studies or Environmental Impact Assessment courses. Further specialization can be found in courses covering Renewable Energy, Sustainable Agriculture and Environmental Risk Assessment. AIU has developed this program, so that graduates can enter the workforce in many areas including environmental consulting/assessment, research and evaluation, policy development for government and non-profit organizations and conservation management for land trust and nature conservation organizations. The program’s flexible learning style enables students to personalize their degree to share their interests and development needs in the fast-moving and expanding area of Environmental Science.

Orientation Courses

AIU provides full Orientation Courses as part of its Environmental Science degree to properly acclimate students to learn. The Orientation Courses are a mechanism to familiarize students with the underlying principles of environmental science, the online learning environment employed by the institution, University resources, and academic expectations. Orientation seminar-based courses are designed with the goal of getting students invested in their online degree through thoughtful and engaging content. Research Projects in Bachelors in Environmental Science

Job Description

A Bachelor’s in Environmental Science can provide access and knowledge to understand an environmental issue in depth, which may include surveying a site, assessing issues, data and observations to answer any questions about air, water, soil quality or the status of species biodiversity. The Bachelor program covers developing environmental impact assessments and working on developing sustaining action plans developed on site and implented co-developing conservation practices as to monitor implementation and actively creating adaptive management action plans as response to identified challenges and issues.

  • Water Resource Specialist: an area of employment for recent graduates is being a specialist in the management or quality of water resources.   • Wildlife Biologist: Wildlife biologist study animal behaviors and species conservation by working in a research facility, an animal corporation with a preservation or conservation status, or working with a government agency on wildlife populations and studies.
  • Environmental Health and Safety Office: potentially, there are opportunities for a graduate to conduct the consulting work with individuals and organizations dedicated to ensuring safety or workplace compliance in areas potential to the environment or begin health and safety for work or clean environments.

While requirements for a Bachelors in Environmental Science will differ by university or college they will often include: 

  • High School degree or equivalent: Students will have had to either complete a high school education (i.e. a diploma) or had some equivalent qualification.
  • Transcripts: Students will be asked to submit high school transcripts that demonstrate their academic performance.
  • Standardized Test Scores: a university may request students have standardized test scores (SAT, ACT).
  • Letters of recommendation: You will be required to have letters of recommendation from teachers or academic advisors.
