The online masters in reproductive health courses in the MSc in reproductive health at AIU are structured to provide broad insight into reproductive health from a medical, social and ethical perspective from a policy standpoint. To commence the Master’s program in Reproductive Health, students complete an orientation consisting of several courses that introduce the AIU paradigm of andragogic learning, research, and distance learning experiences. The reproductive health master’s programs students will build a solid master’s in maternal and reproductive health academic foundation, practice critical thinking, academic writing, and digital research skills, and explore all of the rich maternal health and family planning virtual resources available at AIU. Students finish the orientation equipped and confident to implement their study plan, interact with faculty mentors, and field AIU flexible, self-directed learning.
AIU’s Master’s in Reproductive Health contains research projects for students to engage in specialized areas of interest and investigate real challenges in health. Examples of projects can include studies of outcomes relating to maternal and neonatal health, evaluations of sexual health and family planning programs, examinations of reproductive rights policies, investigations of infertility and technologies associated with it, or studies of interventions in communities to improve adolescents’ reproductive health. By way of AIU’s flexible andragogic model, students are able to undertake projects that fulfill course requirements and create real solutions that can change public health systems, shape policy, and enhance sustainable development in reproductive health.
The thesis defense is the final academic requirement of the Master’s in Reproductive Health at AIU. Here, the student will display their ability to conduct independent, rigorous research and successfully defend those findings before an academic committee. The whole process is a chance for learners to demonstrate their critical thinking and judgement, their understanding of and ability to engage with research in order to find evidence-based solutions to problems, and defend the relevance, originality and impact of their work.
In keeping with AIU’s andragogic learning philosophy, we conceptualize the thesis defense as both evaluative (for the student) and developmentally beneficial (from a learning perspective); thus, we hope that students receive meaningful feedback on the thesis process, while making a case to impact the knowledge production within the reproductive health field. Making it to the defense is a major achievement, as the student can now lay claim to some expertise and readiness to take a leadership role in research, policy and practice.
