Addiction remains a significant public health challenge, with malnutrition frequently observed among individuals with substance use disorders. Poor dietary habits and nutrient deficiencies adversely affect brain function, mood regulation, and physical health, hindering recovery efforts. This thesis investigates how targeted nutritional strategies—such as micronutrient supplementation and diet optimization—can serve as effective adjuncts in addiction treatment. By addressing malnutrition, these interventions may stabilize neurotransmitter levels, improve mental health, and enhance resilience against relapse. Despite early proposals dating back to 1955, integrating nutrition into conventional addiction treatment remains underdeveloped. This research advocates for comprehensive standards and customized programs that incorporate nutrition into holistic recovery models, ultimately aiming to improve treatment outcomes and long-term sobriety.
